Description:
The Autism Summer Symposium is an intensive two-week training
designed to provide teachers and other service providers an opportunity to gain
first hand knowledge about autism from the best teachers, the kids themselves
and their families. Each workshop trainee is assigned to a classroom and paired
with a student. These trainees receive supportive instruction and mentoring
from a mentor teacher, Project PEAK (Programming and Evaluation for Kids with
Autism) staff and a veteran service provider and autism specialist. Special
education teachers completing the training are placed on the Oklahoma Special
Education Teacher Registry for Autism.
The morning sessions consist of extensive hands-on work in classroom settings for the trainees and kids, while the families meet to network and learn more from each other and invited guests about resources and supports. Dee Blose, parent of a son with autism and symposium coordinator, moderates family networking and information sessions.
The afternoon sessions are an opportunity for the trainees to de-brief their morning experiences and to join with families to learn more about autism from Dr. Diana Mobley. Afternoon topics include: what is autism? evaluation procedures and instruments, educational strategies, structured teaching, social skills acquisition, communication strategies, sensory processing, educational placement options, family/sibling issues, transition for students with autism, life in the community, and experimental therapies.
