General Surgery

The General Surgery curriculum is comprehensive and includes didactic, research and clinical training. The resources of the department include not only our faculty and extensive clinical environments but laboratories, research and computer facilities. The program stresses all aspects of diagnostic work-up, preoperative preparation, intraoperative judgment, surgical technique, postoperative management and follow-up care. The wide variety of clinical problems presented at this multi-hospital complex allows each resident the opportunity to observe and experience firsthand the complexities of the response of the surgical patient to disease, trauma, and operative intervention.

The General Surgery Residency program is structured to provide the opportunity to participate in the care of a variety of patient problems through "hands-on" experience and in scholarly activities. Residents achieve clinical proficiency through graduated responsibility commensurate with their ability and level of training during five years of clinical experience.

Residents participate in the operating room beginning in their internship year. All operative cases are supervised by attending staff. Senior residents participate in the education of junior residents. Weekly conferences are led by senior residents who discuss interesting cases and share recent literature on the topic. Additionally, there is a weekly teaching conference for residents to cover basic science and clinical surgical topics.

Clinical rotations include: general surgery including laparoscopic surgery, cardiothoracic, vascular, transplant, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, critical care and trauma.
