Transplant Surgery
The Transplant Surgery program is a diverse discipline dependent on the specialty talents of many individuals including Department of Surgery faculty members, Larry R. Pennington, M.D. and Ronald A. Squires, M.D. Residents rotating on the transplant service are exposed to the preoperative preparation of organ recipients, including immunosuppressive protocols, as well as the diagnosis and complex postoperative management of these patients who often develop allograft rejection and opportunistic infections. Specifically, the surgical resident is responsible for completing history and physical examinations, presenting inpatient cases, assisting on all transplant operations, multi-organ donor procurement surgery, and vascular access procedures. The Transplant Surgery Section is responsible for the kidney transplants and kidney pancreas transplants at the OU Health Sciences Center. In addition the transplant team is involved in the care of cardiac and liver transplant recipients. New this year, residents on the transplant service also cover trauma and critical care patients.
