Frequently Asked Questions???

How do I apply for aid at OUHSC?

The Free Application for federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov or contact the Financial Aid office for a complete Financial Aid packet.
Our office is located in the Student Center, Room 301 (1106 N Stonewall). Office hours are 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. You may reach us by phone at (405) 271-2118 or by fax at (405) 271-5446. Our E-mail address is financial-aid@ouhsc.edu. If you need to mail documents the address is: University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Office of Financial Aid, P. O. Box 26901, Oklahoma City, OK 73126.

What is the deadline for submitting my FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid)?
The recommended date to have your application RECEIVED BY THE FEDERAL PROCESSOR is March 1 of each year, for the following academic year. However we will continue to process the FAFSAs all year; this date is recommended for campus based aid such as Federal Perkins and Lew Wentz loans.

What is OUHSC's Title IV Code required for the FAFSA?

005889

What if I need more aid and/or the FAFSA does not reflect my present situation?
You can come in or send e-mail to our office explaining your situation and how it has changed. We will be glad to review your information to see if there is anything more we can do for you. Our e-mail address is financial-aid@ouhsc.edu.

My parents did not claim me on their tax return this year. Can I file my FAFSA as an Independent student?
If you are able to answer "Yes" to any question in Step Three of the 2007-2008 FAFSA, you will be considered an independent student for the 07-08 academic year. If you cannot answer "Yes" and feel you should be considered an independent student, you should contact our office and make an appointment with your Counselor to discuss your situation BEFORE you send in your FAFSA.

Will you discuss my aid with family or friends?
FERPA (Federal Right to Privacy Act) prohibits us from discussing any of your specific financial matters with anyone without your written permission.

How can I get a scholarship?
Most OUHSC scholarships are based either on your admissions application, or the department in which you are majoring, or come from an outside source. You can also visit any large library and ask to see their section on Grants and Scholarships. To assist your needs The University of Oklahoma has provided a guide to financial aid and scholarships at the University of Oklahoma for undergraduate, graduate, and Health Sciences Center students. Click here for the guide

What hours is your office open?
8am to 5pm, M-F.

My SAR indicates I was selected for "Verification". What does this mean?
Verification means that you must confirm, by submitting a copy of your federal tax return and completing the Verification Worksheet, that information you reported on the FAFSA in regard to income and family size was correct. Dependent undergraduates will need to include parental taxes.

Why is it that when I try calling your office I can never get through?
Our office handles hundreds of phone calls per week during peak times. You might try either faxing us (271-5446) or sending e-mail (financial-aid@ouhsc.edu). Your Counselor will then respond to you by e-mail. We have our phones set to ring in individual counselor's offices when the mail lines are busy, but sometimes even then you still have to wait or leave a message.

How long does the awarding process take?
We begin awarding on May 1st. After that is takes approximately 2 weeks for new applications to be awarded.

How can I obtain Oklahoma residency for tuition purposes?
Contact the Admissions department in the Registrar's office, Basic Sciences Building, Room 200. . Telephone (405) 271-2655

What is the PIN?
The PIN serves as your identifier to let you access your personal information in various U.S. Department of Education systems. It's like the Personal Identification Number that you get from your bank that enables you to access your account. Because your PIN serves as your electronic signature, you should not give it to anyone. Once you successfully complete a request, your PIN will be mailed to you via the U.S. Postal Service. It will take approximately 7-10 days after you request your PIN for you to receive it in the mail. Apply now at http://pin.ed.gov/.

How can I find information about my current or previous Perkins, Stafford, or Alternative loans?
In order to view your Perkins or Stafford loans you can visit NSLDS (www.nslds.ed.gov). You will need your Department of Education PIN number for access. If you intend to view your current Stafford or Alternative loans you can visit ELM Resources. If you have not used ELM Resources before or have forgotten your password you have to Create a UserID and Password.

Why do I have to provide parental income information for Health Professions Loans and Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students?
Parental income is required on the FAFSA by the Department of Health and Human Services, the agency which funds these programs. Parental income does not affect eligibility of other federal aid for independent students.

Where can I locate my Selective Service information?
Selective Service information can be obtained by visiting the Online Verification at the Selective Service System website (https://www4.sss.gov/regver/verification1.asp).
