Orthopedic Surgery &
Rehabilitation Residency Program

The Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center is a fully accredited program for the post-graduate education of residents and fellows.

The program requires five years of post-graduate education. The first year, or PGY-1 level, is a Categorical position obtained through the NRMP and consists of a broad surgical year which includes three months of orthopedic surgery. The remaining four years are in general orthopedics with the balance of time devoted to the three major ares of pediatric, trauma, and adult reconstructive surgery. Additional time may be required according to the needs and desires of the individual resident.

History of the department orthopedics:

There were originally three orthopedic training programs of orthopedics in Oklahoma City. One was headed by Dr. Kelly West, one by Dr. Earl McBride, and one by Dr. Don O'Donoghue. All three were eventually consolidated into one department centered around The University Hospital and chaired by Dr. O'Donoghue until 1965. Dr. Joseph Kopta was chairman from 1974 to 1992. Dr. Andy Sullivan was chairman from 1992 - 2005. Dr. David Teague was interim chair from 2005 - 2007 and became chairman in February of 2007.

Until 1974 the department was entirely a clinical department. Currently there are 10 full-time faculty, two orthotists, and one prosthotist. Part-time faculty and volunteer faculty continue to be a vital part of the orthopedic surgery residency training program.
