Residents must confer with the Research Director during the second year to decide on a research project. Thereafter, residents at the 3rd, 4th, and 5th year levels usually write a paper of adequate quality to be presented at a national meeting. Residents work with faculty advisors on these. Papers are presented at the Department-sponsored two day Annual Visiting Professorship meeting in May or June.
Papers and exhibits may be submitted for presentation at national meetings after clearance has been obtained from the Department Chair; however, a paper or exhibit may be presented at only one meeting per academic year at Department expense. Residents who have a paper or exhibit accepted for presentation will be funded with the same limitation guidelines as for attending other professional meetings. Attending a meeting to present will not count as an allotted meeting. The restriction of five (5) educational leave days per academic year always applies, so it may be necessary to use vacation days or take leave without pay if more than one meeting is attended in an academic year.
