Conferences

A Schedule of Events is published monthly and distributed to each resident. Attendance at scheduled conferences is mandatory for all residents. The routine exceptions are the morning adult and pediatric conferences where scheduled surgery takes precedence at the non-host hospitals (i.e. some of the CHO residents will not be able to attend the adult conference and vice versa).

Regularly scheduled conferences include:

Once each month

.

M&M and Journal Club

July - Sep

6:30 a.m.

Orthopedic Surgery "Boot Camp", consisting of physical diagnosis, basic casting, basic science and anatomy dissection by surgical approach.

Mon & Friday

6:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Conferences on varying topics including pediatrics, trauma, sports, hand, tumor, spine, foot/ankle or reconstructive surgery.

Fridays 7:00 a.m. Orthopedic Surgery Grand Rounds. A variety of orthopedic surgery topics and speakers consist of full time faculty and orthopedic surgery practitioners in the community.

In addition to weekly conferences, there is a monthly Journal Club, the purpose being to prepare you for the years when your continuing education will be largely self structured. A resident is expected to show knowledge of a given article, to be able to explain the major thrust of the article and the means the authors utilized to prove their position. An assessment of the validity of the author's beliefs and whether scientific methods were used to achieve them and comment as to the usefulness of a given article should be part of the discussion. Currently, we utilize the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery publication.

In addition to the monthly journal club featuring the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, there is a weekly Sports Medicine Journal Club, with articles selected by the sports medicine attendings. Also, there is a monthly Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Journal Club, with articles selected by our pediatric orthopedic faculty.
