Pulmonary and Critical Care

The faculty of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine are nationally recognized experts in the care of critically ill patients and those with complicated pulmonary diseases. Faculty directly supervise the care of critically ill patients with life threatening disorders such as acute respiratory failure, septic shock and multi-organ failure. They are familiar with the latest technological advances available to manage these desperately ill patients while new treatments are available for those willing to participate in research protocols under the careful monitoring of the clinical research team. These studies have resulted in a new life saving therapy for patients with severe sepsis and helped cement the reputation of the OU Medical Center as a center of clinical excellence.

The faculty also diagnose and treat both inpatients and outpatients with a variety of pulmonary disorders ranging from the mundane to the esoteric. Patients with common disorders such as asthma and COPD receive the same expert care as those with unusual diseases such as alveolar proteinosis and primary pulmonary hypertension. The faculty participate in several specialized multidisciplinary clinics for patients with lung cancer, sleep problems and cystic fibrosis. In these clinics, the expertise of the pulmonary faculty is combined with that of specialists from other fields such as surgery, oncology, neurology and ancillary services such as respiratory care and nutrition in order to deliver comprehensive care in a single setting. The availability of a fully equipped modern pulmonary function laboratory for patient evaluations as well as sophisticated treatments such as laser resection and brachytherapy for lung cancers enable our faculty to deliver leading edge care to patients with a variety of disorders. Patients can also take advantage of new treatments for diseases such as COPD and asthma at no cost by participating in studies conducted by the clinical research team.
