The Selection Process

Department of Anesthesiology
University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center

The Department participates in the National Resident Matching Program (ERAS), and selects eight residents for the PGY-1 year annually. Candidates for positions in the residency program are selected on the basis of their application, letters of recommendation, and the results of personal interviews. We attempt to select intellectually competent individuals, who are highly motivated, sincerely committed, and who possess the personal characteristics and interpersonal skills which promise effectiveness in dealing with patients, other physicians, and hospital personnel. Candidates for positions are interviewed on Friday mornings. Interviews begin in October and end in December. The interview session begins informally Thursday night with a casual dinner with the residents. The formal interview begins at 8.00 a.m. Friday and consists of a general overview of the program, presented by Dr. Fitch, individual interviews with the members of the committee, a tour of the facilities, and lunch with some of the residents.
