Didactic Teaching in Anesthesiology

The faculty of the Department is deeply committed to providing a comprehensive didactic program covering the entire spectrum of anesthesiology. A number of courses and conferences are provided throughout the year, to offer our residents a thorough grounding in the discipline. An Introductory Course is held during the first week of July each year. During this time all new CA-1 residents have no clinical duties, and spend their time in lecture and tutorial formats. Residents are taught the basics of anesthetics, and what a new resident needs to know in order to get started. In addition, demonstrations of the more common anesthesiology technical tasks are organized, such as starting intravenous and arterial lines, intubations, and spinal anesthesia. An eight-week Immersion Course is held during July and August. The object of this course is to provide a thorough grounding and assimilation of basic anesthetic information. This course enables CA-1 residents to rapidly acquire sufficient theoretical knowledge, so they can better understand what they are learning clinically, and function as trainee consultants, rather than technicians.

The Departmental didactic series for the faculty and all residents runs from September through June. Each week one lecturer provides a series covering a related set of topics. These series are for all residents, and will review the entire curriculum over the year.

The Friday Morning series is varied.  Some lecture topics relate to pain management.  Other sessions include both written and oral board preparations. Once per month both the faculty and residents have separate meetings.  Another Friday is reserved for M&M conference.  There is also a visiting professor / grand rounds series for Friday a.m.  The final options for Friday series include either case presentations or journal clubs. An Annual Weekend Review Course is provided in the spring, and attracts anesthesiologists from all over the State. In addition to the core library provided to each beginning CA1 residents, all hospitals have satellite libraries available 24 hours a day.  There is also a journal library in the Department of Anesthesiology located on the second floor of the Oklahoma Allergy Clinic.
