The State

Oklahoma spans a variety of terrain, from open grasslands and prairie in the northwest to forested rolling hills and mountains in the southeast. The state contains dozens of large lakes and reservoirs, including three in the immediate Oklahoma City area. The moderate sunbelt climate allows swimming, boating, and fishing access to these resources through most of the year. The Wichita Mountains, a scenic region for sports, camping and other recreational activities and the home of a large wildlife and buffalo preserve, can be reached after a short drive. Also, within a modest drive are the Ozark Mountains in eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas, and the Rocky Mountains of New Mexico and Colorado.

Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City comprises the center of the metropolitan area containing just over one million residents. The seat of the state government, Oklahoma City is the largest city in the state. Residents can take advantage of a broad array of intellectual activities and recreational opportunities, to include Bricktown and the Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballet Oklahoma, an active Arts Council and numerous museums in the area, including the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, which contribute to the social and cultural life of the city. Norman, twenty miles to the south, is the site of the main campus of the University of Oklahoma, which offers additional recreational activities and opportunities. The region's institutions of higher learning (OU, OUHSC, Oklahoma City University, University of Central Oklahoma, Southern Nazarene University and Oklahoma Christian College) make it an important educational center, in addition to contriution to the social and cultural life of the city. The University Oklahoma of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City is the state's main resource for training scientists in the health fields, physicians, dentist, nurses, pharmacists and a wide range of allied health personnel. The campus covers over 15 square blocks and has approximately 3,000 students enrolled in more than sixty degree programs. The Health Science Center is also home to four major hospitals, the State Department of Health and the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. The Health Sciences Center is located in a residential area in northeast Oklahoma City, about one mile from the downtown area.
