Research Interests

  1. Autoimmune diseases, mainly Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  2. Diabetes and related field, currently genotyping different knocked out genes mice.
  3. Finding a link between SS and SLE autoimmune diseases in which the immune system targets self-constituents. In SS, two major moisture producing glands, lacrimal and salivary glands are mainly affected organs which results in dry eyes and dry mouth, clinically known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca and xerostomia. Our laboratory has developed a new animal model of SS. This is a common autoimmune rheumatic disorder in which there is autoimmune targeting of the salivary and lacrimal glands. Most people with the disease have antibodies in their sera binding the Ro and La proteins.
